Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has described Carnival Calabar as a lasting symbol of resilience and continuity as the event marks its 20th anniversary.

Speaking on Monday at the official flag off of the 20th edition of the carnival at the Millennium Park in Calabar, Governor Otu said the annual festival has grown into one of Africa’s most recognisable cultural and tourism events.

The governor credited former governor Donald Duke for initiating the carnival, noting that the idea has evolved into a defining feature of Cross River State’s identity and a major attraction on the tourism calendar. He also acknowledged the contributions of former governors Liyel Imoke and Ben Ayade for maintaining the festival and ensuring its continuity over the years.

Governor Otu noted that the carnival has withstood numerous challenges, including the disruption caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, due to the determination of successive administrations to protect its cultural and economic importance.

He welcomed visitors from different parts of Nigeria and the diaspora, assuring them of a warm reception and reaffirming the state government’s commitment to enhancing the quality and appeal of the carnival.

Describing the 20th edition as a major milestone, the governor said the anniversary reflects two decades of creativity, growth and sustained development in the state’s tourism sector.

He announced that the 2025 carnival would showcase colourful artistic performances, energetic dance displays and innovative cultural presentations. Governor Otu urged participating bands to creatively interpret the theme of the year, titled “Traces of Time.”

According to him, the theme highlights the historical journey and cultural evolution of Cross River State and should be expressed in ways that will resonate with audiences both locally and internationally.

Governor Otu expressed optimism that the anniversary celebration would further strengthen the global reputation of Carnival Calabar and position Cross River State as a premier tourism destination.
