Nigeria, UK Deepen Defence Cooperation To Tackle Emerging Security Threats

Nigeria and the UK strengthen defence partnership to boost intelligence sharing, training and response to evolving security challenges.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their long-standing defence partnership as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to address evolving security threats through sustained international cooperation.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, stated this while receiving the United Kingdom High Commission delegation led by High Commissioner Richard Montgomery at Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

Oluyede commended the UK for its consistent support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), particularly in professional military education, specialised training and operational capacity development. He said such cooperation remains central to Nigeria’s national and regional security objectives.

The CDS reaffirmed the AFN’s commitment to continuous professional development and expressed confidence that deeper collaboration with the UK, especially in intelligence sharing and emerging security domains, would significantly enhance operational effectiveness.

In his remarks, Montgomery congratulated the CDS on his service and acknowledged the progress recorded in defence cooperation between both countries. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening defence ties with Nigeria, describing the partnership as forward-looking and mutually beneficial.

In a statement, the Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said the engagement focused on enhancing operational and strategic cooperation in response to dynamic regional and global security threats.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters condemned recent terrorist attacks on Woro and neighbouring communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, expressing condolences to affected families and communities.

The military said troops had been deployed for sustained patrols and surveillance in the area, assuring Nigerians that efforts would be intensified, in collaboration with other security agencies, to bring perpetrators to justice and safeguard lives nationwide.
