Contamination: NAFDAC Announces Recall of Aptamil, Follow-on Milks

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has disclosed that Danone Nutricia has recalled several batches of its Aptamil, Cow and Gate First Infant Milk, and Follow-on Milk Formula products.

NAFDAC issued the alert on X on Wednesday to notify healthcare professionals, caregivers, relevant stakeholders, and the public of the precautionary recall due to potential contamination with the cereulide toxin.

NAFDAC said, “Public Alert No. 08/2026. Danone Nutricia recalls several batches of Aptamil, Cow and Gate First Infant Milk, and Follow-on Milk Formula products due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin

“NAFDAC is notifying the public, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and all relevant stakeholders of the precautionary recall of Aptamil 1 From Birth First Infant Milk, and Follow-on Milk Formula by Danone Nutricia due to potential contamination with cereulide.

“Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacterium, Bacillus cereus, known to cause foodborne illness and may cause symptoms such as nausea and severe vomiting.”

The recalled products include 800g of Aptamil 1 From Birth First Infant Milk, 700 and 800g of Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk, 700g of Cow and Gate 1 First Infant Milk, 1.2kg of Cow and Gate 1 First Infant Milk Big Pack, 800g of Cow and Gate 1 First Infant Milk Hungry, 600g Cow and Gate 1 First Infant Milk and 800g Cow and Gate Anti-Reflux.

Others are 1.2kg of Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk Big Pack, 800g of Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk Hungry, Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk Pre-Measured Tabs, 800g of Aptamil 2 Follow-On Milk, 700g of Aptamil 2 Follow-On Milk, 1.2kg Aptamil 2 Follow-On Milk Big Pack, Aptamil 2 Follow-On Milk Pre-Measured Tabs and 800g Cow & Gate 1 First Infant Milk.

The agency stated that although the batches in question were manufactured in Ireland and Hungary and distributed across the European Union, the United Kingdom, and third countries, the recall does not impact the Aptamil Infant Formulae produced specifically for Nigeria, which complies with Codex standards and is safe for consumption.

Aptamil infant formula and Follow-on/growing-up milks are duly registered with NAFDAC for the Nigerian market.

NAFDAC said the company notified that “it has proactively blocked products at the warehouse in Nigeria as a precaution and has begun laboratory analysis”.
