West Ham Boss Cracks Down on Traoré’s Gym Sessions to Preserve Pace

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that winger Adama Traore has been banned from lifting weights at the club’s training ground, insisting the powerful wide man already carries sufficient muscle.

Traore, known for his imposing physique and explosive pace, was described by Nuno as “incredible” in terms of his physical build. However, the manager stressed that the 30-year-old should avoid additional strength training beyond essential prevention work.

“I’ve told him to stay out of the gym,” Nuno said ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Fulham. “It’s enough weight that he carries. He’ll do prevention work, but he’s not in there lifting weights.”

The issue resurfaced after team-mate Crysencio Summerville posted a video on social media showing Traore bench-pressing 145kg at West Ham’s Rush Green training ground. The clip appeared to contradict Traore’s earlier claim that he does not lift weights.

Nuno contrasted Traore’s situation with that of Under-21 defender Airidas Golambeckis, who the manager said spends significant time in the gym in an effort to build muscle. “He’s the one that needs some muscle — it’s the other way around,” Nuno added.

Traore joined West Ham from Fulham in January in a deal worth up to £2m, having made 20 appearances in all competitions earlier this season. Since his move, he has featured four times as a substitute in the Premier League, with his only start coming in the FA Cup fourth-round victory over Burton Albion.

Despite limited game time so far, Nuno remains confident in the winger’s qualities. Having previously worked with Traore during his time at Wolves, the manager described him as a unique talent capable of influencing matches.

“Traore’s unique. There are not many players in world football with his ability, pace and skills in one-v-one situations,” Nuno said. “He’s a talent that we have to take advantage of, but it will take time. He has to adapt and understand the dynamic of the team.”

As West Ham continue their fight for Premier League survival, Nuno believes Traore’s opportunity to make a decisive impact will come.
