ECOWAS Parliament Seeks Policies Focused on Real Economic Gains For West Africans

The speaker of the ECOWAS parliament, Memounatou Ibrahima, has called for stronger policies that translate regional integration into real economic opportunities for citizens and businesses across West Africa.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at a briefing to mark the parliament’s 25th anniversary, Ms Ibrahima said regional cooperation must move beyond political agreements and deliver tangible benefits for people, particularly through private-sector growth.

Ms Ibrahima said stronger engagement with businesses would help drive trade, innovation and job creation across the region.

“As the private sector across the region continues to expand its role in various sectors, ECOWAS institutions remain critical partners in shaping an integrated and prosperous regional economy,” she said.

She added that the parliament’s role includes involving citizens in the regional integration process, strengthening democratic governance and supporting economic cooperation among member states.

According to her, collaboration with businesses and development organisations is necessary to address issues such as trade barriers, support for small businesses and opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs.

“Regional integration requires collaboration that goes beyond public institutions. We are partnering with private sector actors whose expertise in trade facilitation, SMEs development, women’s empowerment and youth innovation aligns with our objectives,” she said.

As part of activities to mark its 25th anniversary, the parliament said it would work with private organisations, including Borderless Trade and Investment and Duchess Nigeria Limited, to organise events across several West African countries.

The programmes are expected to take place in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Cabo Verde, Togo and Sierra Leone, and will focus on entrepreneurship, youth innovation and trade.

Managing partner of Borderless Trade and Investment, Olori Doye, said the organisation would support initiatives to strengthen regional economic integration.

Victoria Akai of Duchess Nigeria Limited said private-sector groups, including financial institutions, had shown interest in participating in the anniversary programmes.

The activities will include youth innovation competitions, forums for small businesses, programmes to support women entrepreneurs and civic awareness campaigns across the region.
