The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the nationwide deployment of personnel and logistics for its 2026 Eid-El-Fitri special patrol operations aimed at ensuring safe travels during the festive period.
The exercise, scheduled to run from March 17 to March 22, was approved by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as part of measures to reduce road crashes and maintain free flow of traffic on highways across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the corps said the operation would involve increased patrol visibility, strategic deployment of rescue teams and intensified public enlightenment campaigns to guide motorists and other road users.
According to the statement, the period of Eid-El-Fitri celebrations is usually marked by heavy vehicular movement as Muslim faithful travel to celebrate with family members and loved ones.
To manage the expected surge in traffic, the corps said operational assets have been mobilised nationwide, with officers directed to focus on preventing avoidable crashes often linked to speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, the use of mobile phones while driving and other traffic violations.
The FRSC said it would maintain 24-hour patrol operations along major road corridors across the country, supported by standby rescue teams, ambulances, tow trucks, patrol vehicles and motorbikes to ensure prompt response to emergencies.
It added that personnel would also work to remove obstructions from highways and closely monitor traffic situations in order to minimise delays for road users.
The statement noted that enforcement during the operation would target offences such as excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, tyre violations, lane indiscipline, road obstruction, mix-loading of passengers and goods, seat-belt violations and the use of mechanically deficient vehicles.
Sector commanders across the country have also been directed to fully deploy operational equipment including patrol vehicles, advanced life support ambulances, radar guns, breathalysers, traffic cones, patrol bikes and communication gadgets to support the exercise.
The corps further disclosed that the operation would be carried out in collaboration with other agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to ensure effective emergency response and maintain order on highways.
FRSC also said it would utilise its National Traffic Radio 107.1FM to provide real-time traffic updates, travel advisories and alternative route guidance to motorists throughout the operation.
Members of the public were encouraged to report crashes, traffic obstructions or emergencies through the FRSC toll-free number 122 or the 0700-CALL-FRSC line.
The corps marshal urged motorists to cooperate with road safety personnel and other law enforcement agencies by obeying traffic rules, avoiding speeding and ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy while travelling during the festive period.
