President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held by terrorists in Katsina State, declaring that those responsible for acts of terror will face the full force of the law.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President sympathised with the late general’s family, particularly his wife, who remains in captivity, and extended his condolences to the Katsina State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Tinubu insisted that the Federal Government would not yield to the demands of terrorist groups by releasing suspects in government custody, stressing that the criminals had “done their worst” but would not weaken the nation’s resolve.
He recalled his Democracy Day message, reiterating that bandits, kidnappers and their sponsors must either surrender or prepare to face decisive action from the Nigerian state.
“The opportunity for surrender will not remain open indefinitely, and no mercy will be shown to those who profit from the blood of Nigerians,” the President said.
He urged citizens to remain united and confident that the country would ultimately overcome terrorism and build a safer and more prosperous future.
According to Tinubu, the death of the retired army officer should strengthen Nigeria’s determination never to negotiate with terrorists but to continue treating them as enemies of the state who must be confronted.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Army also mourned the former Director of Defence Information, describing his death as a painful loss to the nation.
In a statement signed by the committee’s chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the lawmakers praised Abubakar’s distinguished military career and his continued contributions to national security after retirement.
The committee extended condolences to his family, the Nigerian Army, the people of Batsari Local Government Area and the Katsina State Government, while praying for Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort those he left behind.
The senators further reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Executive and security agencies in strengthening measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the country. They also commended the efforts of security personnel and appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and united as operations to restore peace continue.
Major General Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, while travelling on the Katsina–Matazu road on his way to his hometown. He had retired from the Nigerian Army after a distinguished military career.
