Nigerian Army Marks 163rd Anniversary, Reaffirms Commitment to National Security ‎

The Nigerian Army has restated its dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens as it commemorates its 163rd anniversary, pledging continued operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and other security threats across the country.

‎

‎The Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, gave the assurance in a goodwill message delivered during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 Interdenominational Church Service held in Abuja, which officially kicked off activities marking the anniversary.

‎

‎Represented by Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, the Army Chief described the milestone as a moment for reflection, thanksgiving, and appreciation of the sacrifices made by personnel in active service.

‎

‎He noted that the celebration also provides an opportunity to honour fallen heroes and acknowledge serving officers and soldiers who continue to operate in various theatres across the country under challenging conditions.

‎

‎According to him, the anniversary theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” underscores the force’s constitutional responsibility to defend the country while maintaining public trust and stability.

‎

‎Oluyede stated that troops remain actively engaged in multiple security operations nationwide and have recorded notable successes, including the neutralisation of criminal elements, destruction of terrorist camps, rescue of hostages, and restoration of peace in affected communities.

‎

‎He commended the professionalism and discipline of personnel, attributing operational gains to improved collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders.

‎

‎The Army Chief also highlighted his command philosophy, which focuses on building a more professional, adaptive, combat-ready, and resilient force, with emphasis on leadership development, operational efficiency, and personnel welfare under the “Soldier First” policy.

‎

‎He explained that troop welfare remains a priority, with ongoing improvements in housing, healthcare, training, and educational support for military personnel and their families.

‎

‎Oluyede further disclosed that the Army has experienced an increase in recruitment following directives aimed at strengthening national security architecture, noting that new recruits will be properly trained and equipped for effective service.

‎

‎He paid tribute to fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifices as a lasting source of inspiration, while also acknowledging wounded personnel, veterans, and military families for their continued support.

‎

‎He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his backing of the Armed Forces, saying recent operational successes were made possible through government support.

‎

‎He urged Nigerians and military personnel to continue praying for peace, unity, and stability in the country.

‎

‎In a sermon, Brig. Gen. Anthony Maimagani described military service as a divine and patriotic duty, urging personnel to uphold justice, courage, and compassion while protecting civilians.

‎

‎He encouraged troops to remain steadfast despite ongoing security challenges and prayed for lasting peace and unity in Nigeria.
