The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to establish state police across Nigeria, describing the initiative as a timely response to the country’s growing security challenges.
Justice Agya spoke on Saturday during a dinner and fundraising event for the Justice Joel Agya Bar Centre Project, organised by the Wukari Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Wukari.
According to him, creating state police would enable communities to be protected by officers who are familiar with their local environment, culture and security realities, rather than personnel deployed from distant parts of the country.
He noted that recruiting indigenous personnel into state police formations would strengthen local security and improve the maintenance of law and order. However, he stressed that the proposed policing system must function strictly within the provisions of the law.
The Chief Judge also applauded the Wukari NBA for organising its Law Week activities and encouraged guests at the event to contribute generously toward the construction of the branch’s secretariat complex.
Speaking at the occasion, Chairman of the Wukari NBA Branch, Hassan Saubana, appealed to the judiciary to increase the number of judicial officers serving courts in the southern part of Taraba State.
Saubana said the shortage of judicial personnel has continued to slow the administration of justice in the area. He thanked Justice Agya, High Court judges and other dignitaries for honouring the event with their presence.
He further assured attendees that construction of the Justice Joel Agya NBA Secretariat Complex would begin as soon as adequate funding is secured.
