Several vulnerable residents of Abuja, including scavengers, beggars, and petty traders, have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
They are demanding N500 million in compensation for the alleged violation of their rights.
The case was filed by lawyer Abba Hikima in the Federal High Court, Abuja, on behalf of the affected individuals.
The suit, filed in November 2024, targets Wike, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and other government agencies.
The claimants accused the government of arresting, detaining, and harassing vulnerable people without charge, which they argue infringes upon their constitutional rights.
Hikima, representing the plaintiffs, also seeks a public apology from the government and demands policy reforms to protect the rights of vulnerable Nigerians.
He described incidents of forceful arrests and mistreatment, noting that the affected individuals were detained and subjected to threats while conducting lawful activities.
The lawsuit argued that the treatment of the vulnerable people, including verbal abuse and physical intimidation, is inhumane and unconstitutional.
The case is scheduled for hearing on February 4, 2025.
