The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed as “not true” reports that the party is engaged in talks with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in anticipation of an impending court judgment.
In a statement released to journalists on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi categorically rejected claims that the party’s coalition leadership is exploring alternatives with any political party at this time.
“We would like to state categorically that this is not true,” Abdullahi said. “The coalition leadership is not having any such conversation with any political party at the moment.”
The statement reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to overturning what it described as “illegal action taken against our leadership by INEC and other agents of the ruling party.”
Abdullahi characterized this legal battle as “the only path to safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring that multiparty democracy survives in Nigeria.”
While acknowledging openness to expanding the opposition coalition “to bring all opposition elements in the country together to rescue our country,” the spokesman insisted the ADC will not abandon its current course.
“Any suggestion that we are considering abandoning the ADC is preemptive and speculative, and should be ignored,” he stated.
Despite what he called “the flagrant bastardisation of democratic institutions,” Abdullahi expressed confidence that Nigeria’s judiciary would “resist the pressure to be complicit in undermining Nigeria’s democracy at this defining moment.”
