The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of Professor Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following allegations linking him to a pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu tweet from 2023 and subsequent attempts to delete digital evidence.
In a statement released to journalists on Saturday, the party described the revelations as a “grave affront to the integrity of our electoral system,” arguing that the nation’s electoral umpire must be “above suspicion.”
“The referee cannot be running around in the shirt of one of the teams he’s supposed to officiate in a match,” the statement read. It further accused Professor Amupitan of a “desperate attempt to tamper with digital records” to erase evidence of previous partisanship, calling this a “calculated assault on truth and accountability.”
The ADC asserted that the INEC chairman’s conduct has fallen “far below the standard expected of an electoral umpire” based on his recent utterances and what the party calls “incontrovertible digital evidence.”
The party warned that “anything less than his resignation is an insult to the Nigerian people and a dangerous precedent for our democracy.” According to the statement, the ADC will update its petitions to relevant institutions, including foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The party also vowed to “renew and escalate” its civil disobedience action until Professor Amupitan leaves office.
As of press time, the INEC Chairman has not issued a response to the allegations.
