AFAN Seeks Better Welfare For Displaced Farmers

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on the federal government to prioritise the welfare of internally displaced farmers to ensure food security in the country.

The AFAN secretary general, Femi Oke, said this on the sidelines of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lagos.

The two-day conference, themed “Securing Futures: Market-Based Solutions for Internal Displacement,” was held at the Lagos Continental Hotel.

The conference was convened by the office of the vice president in collaboration with the United Nations, the United Kingdom’s International Development partners, and Tropical General Investment.

Mr Oke noted that the welfare of internally displaced farmers should be prioritised to ensure continuous food security in the country.

“The takeaway for us farmers from the conference is that the government should take ventures to ensure that displaced farmers don’t feel ignored.

“We need to make these farmers feel relevant in society despite being displaced. And we believe farmers are the grassroots; we are the ones who are closer to the people, especially the community.

“So, that is why we are glad with the UN and the federal government of Nigeria for putting this conference together. We urge the government to place priority on displaced farmers so as not to affect our food security,” Mr Oke said.

He, however, commended the federal government and private-sector stakeholders for their sustained efforts to support farmers nationwide.

Mr Oke also highlighted AFAN’s ongoing contributions toward food security, farmer empowerment, and inclusive agricultural development across Nigeria.

He noted that the discussions at the conference centred on strengthening food systems, promoting integration, enhancing financial inclusion for internally displaced persons, and advancing private sector-led solutions to displacement challenges.

“AFAN’s participation underscored its commitment to shaping policy conversations and advancing practical solutions that secure sustainable futures for farmers and internally displaced communities across Nigeria,” he said.
