Amdavad 2030: India Promises Historic Centenary Commonwealth Games

India has pledged to deliver a remarkable 100th-anniversary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, with Amdavad, Gujarat, set to host the global sporting event.

‎

‎Following the conclusion of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Indian officials said the country would draw lessons from the recently concluded competition and use them to organise a world-class event for athletes, supporters and officials.

‎

‎Speaking during a transition ceremony and media briefing, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi assured that Amdavad was prepared to shoulder the responsibility, citing the city’s existing infrastructure, transport networks and accommodation facilities.

‎

‎Accompanied by the state’s Department of Sport secretary, Shri Hari Ranjan Rao, Sanghavi described hosting the centenary Games as a major honour and challenge, adding that India would adopt Glasgow’s successful strategies while creating its own unique experience.

‎

‎He said Amdavad’s compact layout, connectivity and modern facilities would make movement easier for participants, while promising that visitors would experience more than just a sporting event.

‎

‎“Coming to Amdavad means entering a home, not just a host city,” Sanghavi said, adding that the city would continue collaborating with the Glasgow organising team to ensure a successful Games.

‎

‎The deputy governor also linked the Commonwealth Games hosting opportunity to India’s broader ambition of becoming a global sports hub and strengthening its bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.

‎

‎According to him, the 2030 Commonwealth Games would serve as proof of India’s ability to organise major international sporting events at the highest standard.

‎

‎Although the full list of sports for Amdavad 2030 has not been confirmed, Sanghavi revealed that cricket could be part of the programme and promised that the para-sport events would rank among the best ever organised.

‎

‎Commonwealth Sport Chief Executive Officer Katie Sadleir said the 2030 edition is expected to feature between 15 and 17 sports.

‎

‎Meanwhile, Glasgow 2026 Chief Executive Officer Phil Batty said the transition into Amdavad 2030 had shown that Commonwealth Games hosting should be accessible to more nations.

‎

‎Batty noted that future editions of the competition would reflect the identity, culture, infrastructure and communities of their host countries, while adopting a more flexible, sustainable and inclusive approach.

‎

‎He added that upcoming Commonwealth Games editions would each have their own distinct character and atmosphere as the event continues to evolve over the next four decades.
