The Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) on Wednesday called for collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to secure the state’s electricity infrastructure.
ASERC chairman Frank Okafor made the call during a courtesy visit to the NSCDC state commandant, Maku Olatunde. Mr Okafor said that the measure would help the commission serve the people better.
According to him, ASERC is ready to explore new areas of collaboration with the NSCDC to secure electricity infrastructure.
He explained that ASERC was saddled with the responsibility of licensing electricity businesses, protection of consumer rights, enforcement of technical and safety standards, and resolution of disputes within the state’s electricity sector.
The ASERC chairman also explained that the commission was established to improve power supply management in the state and strengthen regulatory collaboration with relevant stakeholders to advance the development of the evolving electricity market.
Responding, Mr Olatunde promised to explore areas of mutual collaboration with ASERC to deepen the protection of power infrastructure against vandalism.
He said the collaboration would also shield electricity consumers in the state from exploitation, adding that the corps mandate is to protect critical national, state and local government assets, maintain public order and safeguard lives and property.
The commandant said the NSCDC’s role would help drive regulatory innovation, improve electricity access, and boost the sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector.
The NSCDC boss expressed confidence that the commission would bring positive change to the state’s power sector, noting that stable electricity was vital for economic development and improved living standards.
He urged the commission to be transparent and effective in its operations, adding that earning public confidence was essential for successful regulation.
