The Ane Igala Restoration Network (AIR) has written an open letter to the Ata Igala, His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Alaji Mathew Opaluwa Oguche-Akpa, expressing their concern about the recent actions of the Eje of Ankpa, HRH, Alh. Abubakar Sadiq Ahmed Yakub.
In the letter, the AIR accuses the Eje of Ankpa of attempting to undermine Igala culture and tradition by conferring 44 chieftaincy titles, many of which are of Hausa-Fulani origin, on some Nigerians. They argue that this is an attempt to “ridicule, humiliate and bring to disrepute the Igala stool that he occupies and the Igala culture and tradition that he swore to uphold and preserve.”
The AIR also points to other actions of the Eje of Ankpa that they believe are disrespectful to Igala culture, such as his preference for Hausa attire and language. They also alleged that he has referred to the Sultan of Sokoto as the “owner of his land” and has asked the Sultan to sit on his Royal seat during his coronation ceremony.
The AIR is calling on the Ata Igala to intervene and direct the Eje of Ankpa to withdraw the purported titles. They also want him to cause the Ankpa Traditional Council to explain how the decision to award non-Igala titles was reached.
The situation in Ankpa has since sent tongues wagging. However, the Ata Igala has a crucial role to play in resolving the conflict. His decision could have a lasting impact on the future of the Igala Kingdom.
The Eje of Ankpa has not yet responded to the AIR’s accusations.
This is a developing story and we will continue to update it as more information becomes available.
