Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to implement the party’s resolution to reserve 40% of councillorship positions for women in the upcoming local government election.
“The APC in Kogi State will continue to give more opportunities to women in appreciation of their loyalty and support for the party at all levels,” Governor Ododo said at an expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja on Tuesday.
He commended the party’s decision to nominate women as Vice chairmanship candidates in all 21 local government areas and elected women councillors as council leaders, saying, “This is a step in the right direction towards achieving the 35% affirmative action for women in elective positions.”
Governor Ododo emphasized the need for wide consultations with stakeholders to produce candidates, warning, “The APC must avoid imposition of candidates ahead of the local government election.”
He assured the people of a peaceful, free, and fair election, saying, “We are committed to consolidating on the achievements of the former governor Yahaya Bello.”
The Governor also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s interventions in critical sectors, noting, “The Supreme Court’s judgment on Local Government Autonomy is a relief for my administration, as funds meant for local government areas will now go directly to them.”
Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Ismaila Isah, confirmed the Governor’s statements on July 23, 2024.
