Troops of the Nigerian Army under the operational control of Headquarters 13 Brigade have arrested a suspected gun runner and ammunition racketeer during an intelligence-led operation in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The arrest was carried out by soldiers of 245 Battalion on Sunday, January 26, 2026, following credible intelligence on the activities of arms traffickers within the area.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Ojo Friday, is an indigene of Ochon in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State but is said to be residing at Abomege in Ebonyi State.

During the operation, troops recovered a total of 245 pump action cartridges allegedly intended for illegal distribution. The suspect and the recovered ammunition are currently in military custody, while preliminary investigations are ongoing to uncover the source and intended recipients of the arms.

Speaking on the development, the Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, described the arrest as a major boost to ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the region.

According to him, the operation reflects the Brigade’s proactive and intelligence-driven approach to internal security, aimed at disrupting criminal networks that threaten peace and stability in Cross River State and its environs.

He assured that the Nigerian Army, under 13 Brigade, will continue to collaborate with sister security agencies and host communities to prevent the circulation of illicit arms and maintain a safe environment for socio-economic activities.

Brigadier General Alimikhena also commended the troops for their professionalism, vigilance, and swift response, noting that the success underscores the high level of operational readiness within the Brigade.

He further urged members of the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that would enhance collective security across the state.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements within its area of responsibility.
