Aliyu Bin Abbas, a former aide to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been chosen as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for the 2027 general elections.
Abbas, who founded the National Youth Alliance, secured the party’s ticket during the ADP National Convention held in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.
His emergence comes at a time of increasing political realignments ahead of 2027, as opposition parties and emerging political movements position themselves to challenge the ruling structure amid concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and governance issues.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Okpani Dickson, the final result of the convention was announced around 5:30 a.m., sparking celebrations among delegates and supporters present at the venue.
Dickson clarified that Abbas’ presidential ambition is independent and not linked to his former principal, Atiku Abubakar, who is also expected to contest the 2027 presidential race under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He stressed that Abbas is running on a separate platform and political direction.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Aliyu Bin Abbas is in this race on his own merit and on an entirely independent platform,” the statement read.
He explained that Abbas’ relationship with Atiku ended over two years ago following a political disagreement, adding that both men have since gone their separate ways.
According to him, Abbas’ candidacy is not connected to any political bloc or former alliance but is driven by the demand for fresh leadership, particularly among young Nigerians.
Speaking after his victory at the convention, Abbas described his nomination as the beginning of a broader movement focused on national renewal and youth inclusion.
He said the development represents more than an electoral win, but a call for transformative leadership built on inclusion, economic progress, and national unity.
“As Nigeria stands at a critical point in its history, this moment signals a movement driven by hope, patriotism, and the determination to build a country that works for everyone,” he said.
Abbas added that his campaign would focus on strengthening national unity and creating opportunities for all citizens.
“The journey toward a stronger, more prosperous, and united Nigeria begins now. A new direction is set,” he said.
The National Chairman of the ADP, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, also addressed the convention, describing it as a step forward in the party’s efforts to position itself as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.
He commended members and delegates for their commitment and resilience despite the challenges facing opposition politics in the country.
Sani said Nigeria needs a political culture built on service, inclusion, competence, and internal democracy, stressing that these values remain central to the ADP’s mission.
He added that the convention also provided an opportunity to strengthen the party’s internal structures and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles.
