Spanish giants FC Barcelona have reportedly finalised a deal worth over £69 million for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United F.C..
According to reports by BBC Sport on Wednesday, negotiations between both clubs intensified in recent days before an agreement valued above €80 million was reached for the 24-year-old England international.
Gordon is now expected to complete the remaining paperwork for the move before joining up with the England squad for their World Cup training camp in the United States.
Reports also indicated that FC Bayern Munich had earlier shown interest in signing the winger, but the Bundesliga champions failed to meet Newcastle’s asking price. Barcelona eventually tabled an offer acceptable to the Premier League side.
Newcastle had maintained throughout the talks that they would only allow the forward leave under favourable conditions, with club executives insisting key players would not be sold cheaply.
The transfer is expected to provide a significant financial lift for the Magpies as they prepare to rebuild after ending the Premier League season in 12th position.
A percentage of the transfer fee will reportedly go to Everton F.C. due to a 15 per cent sell-on clause inserted when Gordon moved to Newcastle in 2023.
Speculation surrounding Gordon’s departure had increased in recent weeks after he was left out of Newcastle’s starting line-up for the club’s final four matches of the campaign, suggesting manager Eddie Howe was already preparing for life without him.
Supporters were said to have chanted Gordon’s name following Newcastle’s final-day defeat to Fulham F.C., in what now appears to have been his farewell appearance for the club.
