Cotonou – Benin’s new president visited neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso on Tuesday, in a move widely seen as a sign of easing tensions between the Sahel nations and Cotonou.
The trip marks the first high-level diplomatic outreach from Benin since the new administration took office, coming after months of strained relations over border security, trade, and Benin’s alignment with ECOWAS sanctions.
The visit signals a shift toward dialogue. Benin’s leader “visited neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, in a sign of easing tensions between the Sahel nations and Cotonou,” according to TRT Afrika. Both Niger and Burkina Faso have been under military rule and had previously clashed with Benin over counterterrorism cooperation and accusations of hosting foreign troops.
Analysts say the outreach could help reopen trade routes and strengthen coordination against jihadist groups operating along the porous borders of the three countries. The Sahel region has faced repeated attacks from groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State, making regional security cooperation critical.
The visit is also being watched closely by ECOWAS, as Benin seeks to balance its commitments to the regional bloc with the need for stable relations with its northern neighbours.
For now, officials in all three capitals have described the meetings as “cordial and constructive,” with discussions expected to continue on border management and counterterrorism.
