Burkina Faso’s military government has revealed that the key figures behind a recent attempt to overthrow the ruling junta have taken refuge in neighboring Ivory Coast.
The statement comes after days of internal investigation and arrests tied to what officials have called a failed plot to destabilize the state.
The announcement was made by Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, who said both active and former members of the military were involved in the plan. According to authorities, the conspirators had connections with armed groups and were preparing to launch an attack on the presidential palace. The operation was reportedly scheduled to take place on April 16.
The location of the alleged masterminds has stirred tension, as the government claimed they are currently residing in Ivory Coast. Officials in Ouagadougou have accused these individuals of working closely with anti-government elements and passing sensitive military information to terrorist networks. The government believes the aim was to trigger chaos and force international intervention in the country’s governance.
This is not the first time Burkina Faso has pointed fingers at its southern neighbor. Over the past year, the junta has repeatedly expressed concern about opposition figures and former regime loyalists allegedly finding support or shelter across the border. The latest accusations deepen an already uneasy relationship between the two West African nations.
The failed coup attempt led to the arrest of several military officers and the launch of a broader crackdown on suspected collaborators. Security forces reportedly uncovered plans involving religious and community leaders who were meant to influence army units into backing the move.
While the Ivorian government has not officially responded to the claims, regional observers are closely watching the situation. The growing friction comes at a time when both countries are part of a region plagued by insurgencies, coups, and fragile political transitions.
Burkina Faso’s junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré since 2022, remains under pressure to restore stability. The country continues to face deadly attacks from armed groups, even as it shifts away from traditional allies and forges new ties, including closer cooperation with Russia. The situation remains tense, with security tightened across key locations in the capital and beyond.
