Abuja, Nigeria – December 1, 2023 – Cabo Verde has showcased its democratic credentials and security advancements during a comprehensive country report presented to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Parliament. Delivered on Friday, December 1, the report underscored Cabo Verde’s remarkable strides in various sectors, including politics, security, health, and the implementation of Community texts.
The reportemphasised Cabo Verde’s status as a vibrant democracy with a robust history of free and fair elections. “Cabo Verde has a proven track record of peaceful transitions of power and is currently navigating a phase of cohabitation between the President of the Republic and the government, an arrangement permitted by the country’s semi-presidential system,” the report stated.
Cabo Verde’s unwavering commitment to security was also highlighted. “Cabo Verde stands as a safe and reliable nation with a remarkably low crime rate. The government has made substantial investments in border security and drug trafficking prevention. Additionally, the country has implemented measures to address internal security concerns, including tackling robberies and juvenile delinquency,” the report emphasized.
The country’s adept handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was further commended. “Cabo Verde has effectively managed the COVID-19 pandemic, achieving high vaccination rates and maintaining a low number of active cases. Moreover, the country has made significant progress towards malaria elimination and has initiated vaccination campaigns against other prevalent diseases,” the report noted.
Cabo Verde’s dedication to implementing ECOWAS Community texts was also reaffirmed. “Cabo Verde is committed to the implementation of ECOWAS Community texts and has made considerable progress in ratifying several agreements. The country has also adhered to the decision to introduce biometric identity cards and passports, facilitating the free movement of people and goods within the ECOWAS region,” the report asserted.
Cabo Verde’s unwavering commitment to human rights was also underscored. “Cabo Verde is steadfast in its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. The country has ratified numerous international human rights conventions and has established national institutions dedicated to safeguarding human rights,” the report declared.
The Cabo Verde delegation reiterated its commitment to continued collaboration with ECOWAS and other member states to foster regional integration and development.
