The Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State Prof Gertrude Njar, who was kidnapped over a month ago in Calabar, the State Capital has been rescued by troops of the Nigerian Army.
Respite came the way of the Commissioner when troops of 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army in Calabar attached to Operation Akpakwu, a security outfit floated by the State Government successful track the kidnapper’s den and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun dwell leading to the rescue of Prof Njar.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Brigade, Captain Dorcas Aluko” the troops, acting on actionable intelligence tracked the captors and their captive to a Creek off Jebs Street in Calabar South, The gallant troops tactically sprung an ambush charging at the kidnapper’s surprise after locating their hideout”
“In the ensuing melee, the criminals took to their heels fleeing to the creeks leading to the Calabar estuary while abandoning their victims
in the panic mode”
Captain Aluko who stated that troops are already on the trail of the fleeing criminal elements also disclosed that Prof. Gertrude Njar has been taken to hospital and would be reunited with her family once she is stable.
The 13 Brigade Spokesperson convey the assurances of the Brigade Commander that Army formations will escalate the manhunt for criminals within their operational base to rid the society of such undesirable elements.
