August 15, 2026, marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s academic and literary landscape as Professor Desmond Onyemechi Okocha, a distinguished scholar and pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Bingham University, celebrated his professorial thanksgiving with the launch of three groundbreaking books at the Christian Center Hall in Abuja.
The event, which drew a distinguished audience of family members, friends, well-wishers, and colleagues from across the academic spectrum, served as both a spiritual celebration and an intellectual feast. The three books unveiled during the ceremony—Cogitation, Champions’ Compass, and The Black Shield of India—represent what the author describes as a “tripartite offering” to his identity as a spiritual being, a political animal, and a black man from the African continent.
A Message of Faith and Responsibility
Dr. Felix Oisamoje, who served as both Chairman of the occasion and keynote speaker, set the tone for the ceremony by reflecting on the event’s theme: Faith, Intellectual Stewardship, and Societal Transformation.
Expanding on the theme, Dr. Oisamoje articulated a vision of knowledge that transcends mere academic pursuit. “Faith gives knowledge a moral compass,” he explained. “Intellectual stewardship gives knowledge a sense of responsibility, and societal transformation gives knowledge its ultimate purpose.”
The Chairman commended Professor Okocha for his commitment to writing not merely as a scholarly exercise but as a deliberate instrument for societal impact. “The author has written not simply because he is a scholar, but with the explicit purpose of impacting knowledge, transforming society, and deepening humanity’s relationship with God,” Dr. Oisamoje remarked.
The books, as reviewed during the ceremony, each address distinct yet interconnected themes. They explore deep spiritual reflection, offer commentary on Nigeria’s socio-political challenges, and issue a clarion call to the black race across the African continent.
Cogitation: A Poetic Treaty with the Nation
In his thanksgiving address, Professor Okocha offered profound insights into the motivation behind each work. Speaking on Cogitation, he revealed the book as his “treaty to our nation, political class, and even Nigerians like myself.”
With characteristic candor, the professor explained his creative dilemma: “If I write directly to the president, perhaps the Department of State Security (DSS) will pick me. If I write to my governor or go to my chairman’s television to speak to the heart of the nation, I might be summoned.”
He continued: “I asked myself—in what language can I communicate to the powerful and mighty, the men who hold the powers of guns and the finances of the state? One weapon whispered to my soul: animation. And there is one jewel of scholarship that encapsulates that—Poetry. That is where I found my voice to communicate to society, and that is Cogitation.”
Champions’ Compass: A Gift to the Church
Addressing the second book, Champions’ Compass, Professor Okocha framed it as a personal offering to the church and to his Master, Jesus Christ—a way of giving meaning to his existence as both a believer and a scholar.
“As a scholar and a spiritual being, I asked myself: What will be said of me when my time on earth is over and the world applauds my scholarship? What gift can I give to the church and to my Master to give meaning to my existence?” he reflected.
The Black Shield of India: A Wake-Up Call
The third book, The Black Shield of India, emerges from the author’s identity as a black man from the African continent, Nigeria to be precise. The work serves as a wake-up call to the black race, urging reflection on identity, heritage, and continental destiny.
A Scholar of Distinction
Professor Desmond Onyemechi Okocha is a Full Professor of Journalism and Emerging Media and the Pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Bingham University, Nigeria. His academic standing extends beyond national borders as a member of the Swiss-based International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE), reflecting his commitment to global conversations on media and information integrity.
His leadership roles include serving as Chair of the International Communication Association (ICA) Nigeria Chapter and as Pioneer Chair of the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN) Abuja Branch. Described as a “Scholar-Practitioner of the Third Wave,” Professor Okocha has amassed over 300 citations and 173 publications, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most prolific and impactful communication scholars.
In his closing remarks, the visibly moved professor expressed deep gratitude to all who attended and those who, despite circumstances that prevented their physical presence, believed in him and contributed to making the occasion memorable.
“This day represents not just the launch of three books, but the convergence of my life’s work—as a scholar, a believer, and a son of Africa,” he said.
The event concluded with a sense of shared accomplishment, as attendees celebrated not only the literary achievements of a distinguished academic but the broader vision of scholarship as a vehicle for faith, responsibility, and societal transformation.
