In a move that may come as a blow to Chelsea’s summer transfer plans, Atletico Madrid has rejected a €32.5m bid from the Blues for the signature of Spanish-born Nigerian striker Samu Omorodion.
According to The Athletic, the offer, which included add-ons, was deemed insufficient by Atletico, who are keen to hold on to the talented 20-year-old.
Omorodion, who is currently on loan at Alaves, has been capped by the U19 and U21 Spanish teams and has made it clear that his international future lies with Spain, not Nigeria.
“Spain has given me the opportunity, and I am very grateful for it,” Omorodion said in a recent interview. “I don’t think about Nigeria. My goal is to debut with the senior side and have my career in Spain.”
The young striker’s response puts to rest speculation about a potential switch to the Nigerian national team.
Chelsea will now have to reconsider their options as they search for a new striker to bolster their attack.
