A Chinese woman has gone above and beyond to honour her late boyfriend’s memory by paying off his debts and caring for his parents, even after marrying another man.
Wang Ting, 34, lost her boyfriend, Zeng Zhi, in a car accident in 2016. After his death, she discovered that he had accumulated debts totaling 600,000 yuan ($82,000), including unpaid salaries to his staff, purchases, and loans from friends.
Despite her friends and family advising her against it, Wang felt morally obligated to repay the debts, citing the impact it would have on Zeng’s parents, who had a modest annual income of 50,000 yuan ($7,000).
“If I do not repay the debt, how would those people support their children and elderly?” she said. “I need to bring his life story to a perfect close,” Wang added, expressing her desire to preserve Zeng’s legacy.
To settle the debt, Wang spent her entire savings of 200,000 yuan ($27,000) and even borrowed 60,000 yuan ($8,000) from a friend. She also took on extra work in other provinces to earn more money. Her selfless actions didn’t stop there; she continued to care for Zeng’s parents, taking them on trips and looking after them during hospital visits. When Zeng’s mother suffered a mental breakdown after her son’s passing, Wang made it a point to spend quality time with her.
In a heartwarming gesture, Wang invited Zeng’s parents to her wedding in 2020, reassuring them, “You will always be my parents and the most important people in my life. I will have six parents from now on.” Her actions have sparked widespread admiration online, with many praising her loyalty and devotion.
