The Plateau State Government has reported a worsening cholera outbreak in Mangu Local Government Area, where the number of suspected infections has risen to 53, with five fatalities recorded across three wards.
State health authorities confirmed that the outbreak, which initially involved just eight suspected cases, has now spread to Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 wards, raising fears of ongoing community transmission.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, disclosed the figures during a press briefing in Jos on Monday, noting that while the situation is concerning, it remains under control with coordinated response efforts.
He said, “As of June 12, 2026, we have recorded 53 suspected cases, 10 rapid diagnostic test–reactive cases, four laboratory-confirmed cases, and sadly five deaths.”
According to him, the spread of the disease has prompted intensified public health interventions and renewed calls for community cooperation to prevent further transmission.
Health officials say monitoring and response activities are ongoing as authorities work to contain the outbreak and limit its spread to other parts of the state.
