Court Orders Remand of Two Suspects Over Alleged Robbery in Edo

‎A Benin High Court has ordered that two men accused of robbery be kept in police custody as investigations into the alleged crime continue.

‎

‎The suspects, Peter Venchang, 28, and Sani Atai, 40, were remanded following an application filed by the police prosecutor, Emmanuel Ekibade.

‎

‎Ekibade had asked the court to grant the police permission to keep the defendants in custody for 14 days to enable investigators to complete their enquiries.

‎

‎The prosecutor told the court that the suspects were allegedly involved in a robbery operation targeting Anna Chang, an employee of Ansuda Logistics, on June 30, 2026.

‎

‎He said the incident occurred along the Benin-Abuja Expressway, within the Benin judicial division.

‎

‎According to him, the defendants allegedly stole a truck with registration number BEN 581 ZH, along with some valuable glass containers. He added that the total worth of the stolen items had not yet been determined.

‎

‎The police said the charges against the suspects bordered on conspiracy and robbery, offences allegedly committed in violation of relevant sections of the Criminal Law of Edo State, 2022, and the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act.

‎

‎Ekibade argued that granting the remand request would not infringe on the rights of the defendants, noting that the detention was necessary for proper investigation.

‎

‎“The suspects would not suffer any prejudice if the application is granted,” he told the court.

‎

‎After reviewing the arguments, the presiding judge, Justice Williams Azeigbemhin, approved the application and ordered that the suspects remain in police custody.

‎

‎The court adjourned the matter until August 18, 2026, for further proceedings.
