C’River: Yakurr Council Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum to Ugep, Idomi Leaders Over Renewed Clashes

Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, Yibala Igri Inyang, has ordered community leaders in Ugep and Idomi to identify those behind renewed hostilities between both communities within 72 hours.

In a statement released on Monday, Inyang expressed concern over fresh reports of tension, warning that such actions could undermine the peace recently restored in the area.

He noted that the council, traditional rulers, security agencies and other stakeholders had earlier invested efforts in reconciliation, leading to agreed resolutions aimed at sustaining peace and unity.

According to him, one of the agreements reached at the peace meeting was that anyone found spreading false or inciting information capable of triggering violence would be traced and punished. It also stated that if future clashes occur and the perpetrators cannot be identified, the leadership of the affected community would be held responsible.

Based on these resolutions, the chairman directed the traditional rulers and community heads of both Ugep and Idomi to produce the individuals responsible for any acts or statements fueling renewed tension within three days.

He warned that failure to comply would attract sanctions in line with existing laws and the earlier peace accord.

Inyang stressed that his administration would not tolerate any action capable of disturbing public order, stressing that lives and property must be protected while the peace process is sustained.

He added that security agencies had already been placed on alert and instructed to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the situation.

The council boss also called on residents of both communities to remain calm, cooperate with security operatives, and embrace dialogue as authorities work to maintain lasting peace in the area.
