FIFA President Gianni Infantino says the world football governing body remains confident of Mexico’s ability to host upcoming football events, including the 2026 World Cup.
The Swiss-Italian footall administrator stated this amid rising tensions in Mexico due to cartel-related violence.
Violence had erupted in major Mexico cities, including places billed to host FIFA events such as the World Cup playoff in March, and the mundial later in June, leading widespread concerns and calls for FIFA to re-evaluate their decisions.
However, Infantino defused the tension, stating that FIFA has been monitoring the rising security concerns while expressing full confidence in the country’s leadership.
He also revealed that FIFA has no plans to change the schedule of its upcoming events despite the concerns.
“We are analyzing and monitoring the situation in Mexico at the moment,” Infantino started. “From the outset, I want to express our full confidence in Mexico, in President Claudia Sheinbaum and in the authorities. We are convinced that everything will unfold in the best possible way.”
“We have matches in Mexico in a month for the World Cup Playoff, and the stadium will also be reopened. Mexico is a great country, a football country, and as in every nation in the world, situations arise.”
Infantino also praised the impact of Mexico, one of three co-hosts alongside USA and Canada, in the 2026 World Cup bid success, and expressed his confidence that the quadrennial tournament will be glamorous.
“From my side, and on behalf of FIFA, there is absolute confidence in President Sheinbaum. We are in regular contact with the presidency and the authorities, and we continue to follow the situation.
“The World Cup will be an incredible celebration.”
