The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced a $5 million reward for the capture of three rebel leaders accused of leading the M23 group in taking control of large parts of eastern DRC.
Corneille Nangaa, Sultani Makenga, and Bertrand Bisimwa were sentenced to death in absentia for treason.
The government made this decision as part of its efforts to regain control of areas taken by the rebels. The situation in eastern DRC has worsened this year, with M23 forces advancing rapidly and pushing back government troops. Authorities see these bounties as a way to weaken the leadership of the group.
Alongside the main reward, officials also announced a $4 million bounty for the arrest of two exiled journalists and other individuals accused of working with the rebels. The government claims these figures have played a role in destabilizing the country.
Despite these offers, capturing the wanted individuals remains uncertain. M23, reportedly backed by Rwanda, continues to outmatch the Congolese army. The rebels have taken key cities such as Goma and Bukavu, further strengthening their position.
The government hopes the financial incentives will encourage action against the rebels and their supporters. However, with M23 still advancing, it remains to be seen whether these bounties will have any real impact on the ongoing conflict.
