The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi State has dismissed reports claiming that its State Executive Committee passed a vote of no confidence on the State Chairman, Prince Enyinnaya Alum, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Okereke Nnanna, the party said the report did not reflect the position of the Executive Committee or the majority of party members in the state.
The party acknowledged that there were concerns during its recent primary election process, particularly regarding the conduct of the chairman of the election committee deployed to Ebonyi State. According to the statement, the committee chairman failed to properly recognise the established leadership structure of the party in the state.
The NDC also alleged that the party secretariat was infiltrated by unidentified individuals suspected to be thugs and claimed that two party members, Barrister Adum and Architect Christian Asaga, took the election committee chairman away from the venue in what it described as a “gangster-like” manner.
Despite the incidents, the party maintained that all issues arising from the exercise were resolved amicably and that the primaries were successfully conducted across the state.
The statement further accused certain individuals of attempting to create divisions within the party, alleging that they were being influenced by opposition elements seeking to weaken the NDC’s growing influence in Ebonyi State.
The party also questioned the motive behind a gathering held on Tuesday, alleging that it was organised by individuals whose interests were contrary to those of the NDC. It claimed that several Executive Committee members declined to attend after discovering the true purpose of the meeting, while others participated believing discussions would focus on briefing members about the outcome of the May 29 primary elections.
According to the statement, those behind the alleged vote of no confidence were aggrieved party executives who had allegedly played a role in an unsuccessful attempt to abduct the election committee chairman and his team during the primaries. The party further alleged that the individuals had collected money from aspirants and promised to secure electoral victories for them but turned against the state chairman after their preferred candidates lost.
Reaffirming its commitment to unity, the NDC said its Ebonyi State chapter remains focused on strengthening the party ahead of future political activities and urged members and the public to disregard what it described as false narratives being circulated by “mischief makers and enemies of the party.”
