Education: Lagos Commits to Co-creating Responsive, Future-ready Systems

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on Saturday commemorated the 2026 International Day of Education, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to youth-driven, inclusive, and quality learning outcomes.

The commissioner, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, gave the assurance in a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kayode Sutton.

The commissioner said the theme of the 2026 International Day of Education, “The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education,” is aligned with the state’s education reforms.

He said the reforms targeted access expansion, quality, safety, and innovation across public basic and secondary schools.

“Our programmes reflect a statewide investment in expanding access, improving quality, and modernising infrastructure to deliver better learning outcomes for every child,” he stated.

Mr Alli-Balogun listed some of the state’s initiatives toward educational development, including the construction and rehabilitation of classroom blocks, the inauguration of ultra-modern classrooms, capacity-building workshops for teachers, and the expansion of digital learning through EKO EXCEL and learner support programmes.

According to him, the government’s payment of West African Senior School Certificate Examination fees for eligible students has remained a game-changer.

He said the payment had eased financial burdens and boosted retention, performance, and equitable access to secondary education opportunities.

“We have strengthened policies to support learners with disabilities and vulnerable groups, expanded scholarships, and upgraded inclusive school infrastructure to remove barriers and ensure equal access,” he said.

The commissioner added that the state had intensified child protection measures, safeguarding training, and advocacy against abuse, exploitation, and violence.

He also said that schools conducted safety awareness programmes and fire drills and enforced laboratory regulations.

“Through a unified academic calendar and enhanced monitoring, we are fostering a safe school culture that prioritises risk prevention, learner protection, and overall well-being,” he said.

Mr Alli-Balogun said the ministry remained committed to sustainable reforms and enduring achievements, adding that partnerships with stakeholders would deepen youth participation in co-creating responsive, future-ready education systems.
