EkitiDecides: Accreditation, Voting Begin Statewide as Residents Choose Next Governor

Today, would-be voters across Ekiti, a state in South-West Nigeria, are trooping to the polls to elect a governor for the next four years. They will either re-elect the incumbent or choose a new governor to lead the state. They are gearing up to exercise their franchise from 8:30 a.m., when voting begins, until 2:30 p.m., when polling areas will close before counting begins.

“SDP remains committed to participating in the election and providing a credible alternative platform for the people of Ekiti state,” the in a statement, affirming that SDP’s governorship candidate, Isaac Alade, remains in the race and will participate in today’s election.

Many shops along the Awedele and NTA–Ilawe Road axis remained closed in compliance with the movement restriction for the election.

Some polling units visited already have INEC officials on the ground, preparing for the commencement of accreditation and voting.

Several streets and business premises in the Awedele area of Ado-Ekiti deserted on Saturday morning as residents get ready to elect the next governor.

As of 7:01 a.m., eligible voters were seen heading to their various polling units to cast their ballots.

Yiaga Africa said the today’s governorship election must pass the tests of “preparedness, transparency and neutrality” to be considered a model for electoral integrity under the new electoral act.

Less than 24 hours to the Ekiti governorship election on Friday, the Ekiti Renaissance Movement (ERM) launched a voter sensitisation campaign against vote-buying and vote-selling across 16 LGAs.
