Renowned traditionalist and monarch, Yemi Elebuibon, has called on Yoruba people to embrace their cultural heritage and take pride in their indigenous identity, including the use of traditional names.
Speaking on the significance of Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, the traditional religious and cultural practices of the Yoruba people, Elebuibon stressed that traditional rulers have a responsibility to safeguard customs and values handed down through generations.
He explained that while monarchs are free to practise Christianity or Islam in their personal lives, they should not neglect the traditional rites associated with their royal offices. According to him, such responsibilities are essential to maintaining the cultural foundation and spiritual wellbeing of their communities.
The traditional ruler noted that indigenous practices continue to play a vital role in fostering peace, unity, security and development within Yoruba communities. He argued that kings who genuinely seek the progress of their people should uphold the cultural obligations attached to their thrones.
Elebuibon further encouraged Yoruba people to reconnect with their roots and celebrate their heritage rather than abandoning traditional values and identities in favour of foreign influences.
He maintained that preserving indigenous customs and traditions remains crucial to sustaining the history, culture and collective identity of the Yoruba race.
