A significant shift is unfolding in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle, following revelations that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has agreed in principle to run as vice president alongside Peter Obi in the forthcoming 2027 Presidential election.
The disclosure was made by Ibrahim Abdulkarim, a close aide to Obi, who confirmed that discussions between the two prominent opposition figures have advanced beyond preliminary stages.
“I can categorically say that he agreed,” Abdulkarim stated, noting that Obi and Kwankwaso have held multiple meetings to consolidate the proposed alliance.
According to Abdulkarim, plans are already underway to organize a joint summit that would bring together supporters of both political movements—the Kwankwasiyya and the Obidient groups. Such a summit, he added, could serve as a prelude to the formal announcement of the partnership.
While neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has publicly commented on the agreement, the development points to a deliberate strategy to merge two influential political bases and strengthen opposition positioning ahead of the country’s next elections.
