Wale Adegbite, the former chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria in Ogun, has appealed to the federal government to reverse the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control had banned the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small polyethylene terephthalate bottles (under 200ml) as of January 2026.
Reacting to the ban of alcoholic beverages in sachets, Mr Adegbite said on Wednesday in Ota that the multiplying effect of downsizing, unemployment, and increased crime rate would take its toll on the country.
The former MAN chairman said that, rather than an outright ban, the federal government should direct manufacturers to seek environmentally friendly alternative packaging.
“What the manufacturers only need is to look for an alternative way to package the product to prevent indiscriminate dumping of the sachet in our environment,” he said.
Mr Adegbite condemned the indiscriminate littering of drainages, streets, and roadsides with alcohol sachets by their consumers and urged the federal government to impose sanctions on people found culpable.
