Abuja was aglow with colour, creativity and cultural pride as China and Nigeria celebrated 55 years of diplomatic ties with a joint fashion show that fused tradition, music and modern style.
The event, held in Abuja, drew together designers, models, dancers, government officials and stakeholders in the creative industry for a celebration of people-to-people exchange through fashion and performance.
Models from both nations graced the runway in outfits that reflected their cultural heritage, blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary designs.
Speaking at the event, Yang Jianxing, who represented the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria and the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, said fashion goes beyond clothing and serves as a powerful cultural language.
According to him, the show created a platform for Chinese and Nigerian cultures to engage, stressing that fashion can strengthen friendship between peoples.
“Fashion is more than clothing, it serves as a cultural language capable of connecting people across geographical boundaries,” Jianxing said.
He explained that “every stitch and design could contribute to strengthening people-to-people relations between the two countries.”
Jianxing drew attention to iconic Chinese attires such as Hanfu, Tang-style clothing, Qipao and Mamianqun, and Nigerian fabrics and ensembles including Aso-Oke, Agbada, Buba, Iro and Gele.
He noted that in both countries, clothing embodies identity, tradition, and is central to festivals, weddings and other social celebrations. He added that cross-cultural exchange in fashion could unlock fresh creativity and boost the creative economies of China and Nigeria.
He described 2026, which marks 55 years of China-Nigeria diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, as a fresh opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and practical cooperation.
In his goodwill message, Gabriel Amudipe, Director of Education Support Services at the Federal Ministry of Education, praised the organizers for offering young creatives a learning platform.
Amudipe said programmes like the fashion show promote cross-cultural understanding and give youths the chance to showcase talent.
He urged young participants to view cultural exchange not just as entertainment but as a means to gain knowledge, build networks and explore creative potential.
The event featured rich artistic displays. The National Troupe thrilled the audience with an Afro-contemporary dance, while a segment tagged “A Journey Through Ancient Fashion” revisited historical fashion trends.
Another highlight, “Nigeria Royal Traditions,” showcased traditional-inspired designs modelled by Chinese and Nigerian models. Students of the Chinese language class at the China Cultural Center in Nigeria also performed a dance titled “The Wondering Fish.”
Other runway segments included “The Colours of China,” which celebrated Chinese aesthetics, alongside showcases of Nigerian fashion and contemporary fusion.
Music added colour to the evening, with performances of a Chinese song, “Journey Through Beautiful China,” and the Nigerian piece “Let’s Go and Make a Change” by Capital Voice Abuja.
The show later transitioned to modern designs, culminating in a China-Nigeria fusion collection that merged elements from both cultures into contemporary pieces.
The celebration attracted key stakeholders including Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy; Muazu Hajiya Bintu, CEO of Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics; Jiang Junjie, Deputy Managing Director of CCECC; and Zhang Xinyu, Director-General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria.
Jianxing thanked all designers, models, performers and partners, particularly Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics and the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, for their support in making the event a success.
The fashion show underscored how fashion, music and performance can drive cultural dialogue and foster collaboration among creatives as both countries celebrate over five decades of diplomatic friendship.
