FG Approves New Career Structure for NiMet Workers

The Federal Government has approved the reviewed Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, introducing a new career structure aimed at strengthening staff progression and aligning the agency with reforms in the Federal Public Service.

The agency disclosed this in a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Monday, saying the approval was conveyed in a July 9, 2026, letter from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike.

The statement said the review followed preliminary engagements and an extensive field study conducted in line with the Standard Operating Procedure for reviewing schemes of service.

According to the statement, the letter read, “The review established, among others, the need to align the Agency’s Schemes of Service with current developments in the Federal Public Service, address identified identity deficiencies in some cadres, strengthen career progression opportunities for staff, and adequately reflect the specialised mandates and operational peculiarities of the Agency as Nigeria’s apex meteorological institution.”

It said the approved scheme incorporates junior, intermediate and professional cadre categories while retaining specialised professional cadres unique to the agency.

“Consequently, the reviewed Schemes of Service have been approved to provide an appropriate career structure for the Agency, incorporating the Junior, Intermediate and Professional/Officer cadre categories in line with extant policies.

“The approved Schemes also accommodate the Agency’s peculiar professional cadres while ensuring that the adopted service-wide cadres remain consistent with the extant Approved Schemes of Service for the Federal Public Service,” the letter added.

The government directed NiMet to implement the new scheme in line with extant Public Service Rules, establishment circulars and other regulations governing appointments, promotions, career progression and related personnel matters.

The statement added that officers in the junior and intermediate cadres would only progress beyond their terminal grades after obtaining the prescribed bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification through the approved conversion or upgrading process.

The statement said the approval follows the Federal Government’s decision in April to introduce a new salary structure and updated conditions of service for NiMet workers, which took effect on June 1.

NiMet said the approval would strengthen its workforce and enhance its capacity to deliver meteorological services critical to aviation, agriculture, maritime operations, disaster management and climate monitoring across the country.
