FG Begins Rehabilitation of 22km Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road

The federal government has begun full rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road, a major traffic corridor in Lagos State, with a completion timeline of four months.

The federal controller of works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the project site.

Mr Dare said the project stretched from Ile Zik in Ikeja, which serves as chainage zero to Owode before Iyana-Ilogbo, near the Ogun boundary with Lagos.

According to him, the total length of the road is 22km.

He said that the rehabilitation would involve a combination of flexible and rigid pavements.

“Out of the 22 kilometres, about five kilometres will be constructed using rigid pavement, which is concrete, while the remaining sections will be done with asphalt,” he said.

Mr Dare said the project would also include expansion of the road to accommodate increasing traffic volume.

“We are expanding the road from about 12 metres to 15 metres. The shoulders will be extended by about three metres and will be constructed with rigid pavement using Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP),” he said.

He added that three pedestrian bridges would be constructed at Dopemu, Iyana-Ipaja and Kola to improve safety for residents and road users.

The controller said that a culvert would also be built around Kilometre 10 to improve drainage on the corridor.

He gave the assurance that the expansion would not affect any buildings.

He noted that milling of the existing asphalt pavement was ongoing at the project site.

According to him, after milling, a 50mm compacted asphalt overlay will be laid on the rehabilitated sections.

Mr Dare said the contractor, Laralek Construction Company Ltd., had deployed to multiple sections of the road, with concrete works ongoing in some areas while asphalt milling continued in others.

He appealed to motorists to be patient during the construction period, and thanked Lagos State Government for support.

He specifically praised the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for deploying about 15 officers daily to assist with traffic control on the busy corridor.

The controller assured residents of the area and road users that the entire project, including construction of the pedestrian bridges, would be completed within four months.
