A Resident Family Physician at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, Dr. Ahmad Sani Bala, has been honoured with the World Safety Awards (WoSA) 2026 Occupational, Community and Public Healthcare Distinguished Service Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to patient care, public health advocacy and community service.
The award was presented at the 2026 edition of the World Safety Awards, a prestigious platform that celebrates individuals and institutions advancing safety, health and environmental sustainability across the globe. Dr. Bala’s recognition reflects years of dedicated service marked by professional excellence, compassion and an unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Widely regarded by colleagues and patients as a physician whose dedication extends far beyond the call of duty, Dr. Bala has built a reputation for routinely responding to emergencies and covering clinical shifts even on his designated off days, driven by a deep sense of responsibility to patients in need. Those familiar with his work recount numerous instances in which he has personally provided financial assistance to indigent patients, helping them access medications, investigations and other essential healthcare services when resources were unavailable.
In a related development, Federal Medical Centre Abuja was also honoured with the WoSA Public Safety Campaign of the Year Award, a recognition that highlights the institution’s commitment to public health education, disease prevention initiatives and community-focused safety interventions.
Speaking after receiving the award, Dr. Bala expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and dedicated the recognition to his colleagues, mentors and the management of FMC Abuja.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. It is a reflection of the support, encouragement and shared commitment of everyone I have worked with throughout my career. I remain grateful for the opportunities to serve and for the privilege of making a difference in the lives of patients and communities,” he said.
He noted that the award represents not merely a personal achievement but a renewed call to service, adding that healthcare professionals must continue to place humanity, compassion and excellence at the centre of their work.
The dual recognition accorded to both Dr. Bala and FMC Abuja underscores the growing impact of Nigerian healthcare professionals and institutions on the global stage. For many who know him, the honour comes as fitting recognition for a physician whose career has been defined not only by clinical competence but also by uncommon empathy, selflessness and an enduring commitment to the welfare of others.
