A tragic road accident along the Yola–Mubi highway in Adamawa State has claimed the lives of four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and a soldier.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday around 1:50 p.m. in the Narehi area of Girei/Song Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the collision involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus heading from Yola to Mubi with five passengers on board.
According to preliminary investigations, both vehicles collided head-on, causing the commercial bus to overturn before it was engulfed by fire.
All five occupants of the bus reportedly died in the inferno. Police said initial identification showed that four of the victims were serving NYSC members deployed to Adamawa State.
The deceased corps members identified so far are Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims.
The police also confirmed that a soldier travelling in the military vehicle lost his life in the accident.
Emergency responders and police personnel evacuated the bodies to the Specialist Hospital in Yola.
Reacting to the incident, the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, extended his condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the NYSC over the tragic loss.
