The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspect identified as Atser Sesugh, who was reportedly involved in a fraud and cybercrime investigation handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to a press release issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, the deceased was among three suspects—James Onuh, Atser Sesugh, and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena—arrested on April 28, 2026, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Makurdi office in connection with fraud-related offences.
The statement noted that the suspects allegedly escaped from EFCC custody on May 4, 2026, and went into hiding until credible intelligence led operatives to their suspected hideout behind Mechanic Village in Kanshio, Makurdi, on May 23, 2026.
Upon arrival at the location at about 3:00pm, EFCC operatives reportedly encountered a group of young men suspected to be cultists, who allegedly opened fire on them, triggering a gun exchange. The operatives returned fire and pursued the suspects during which Atser Sesugh was discovered lying in a pool of blood by the roadside.
He was immediately taken to the Police Cottage Hospital in Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining fleeing suspects.
The Command assured residents of a thorough investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and public safety.
Members of the public have also been advised to report suspicious activities through the emergency lines provided by the Command.
