Gawuna in Talks for ADC Governorship Ticket

Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, is reportedly in advanced discussions to join the African Democratic Congress and may be eyeing its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sources indicate that Gawuna, who was the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, has opened talks with the ADC leadership in what is believed to be part of wider political realignments.

According to findings, negotiations between his camp and ADC officials in Kano have progressed significantly, with a final meeting expected to hold to conclude arrangements.

The Kano State chairman of the ADC, Musa Ungogo, confirmed that the discussions were initiated by Gawuna through intermediaries who visited the party leadership over the weekend.

Ungogo, however, dismissed suggestions that the party was the one courting the former deputy governor, insisting that the initiative came directly from Gawuna’s camp.

He disclosed that Gawuna’s delegation included former Kumbotso Local Government chairman, Sagir Fanshekara, and Hon. Kadawa, who met with him and the party secretary during the weekend consultations.

According to him, one of the key conditions presented by Gawuna’s team is that he be considered for the ADC governorship ticket in the 2027 election.

The delegation also reportedly sought political space for his loyalists to contest seats in both the state and national assemblies.

Ungogo added that the group also pushed for a consensus arrangement that would require other governorship aspirants within the party to step down in Gawuna’s favour, citing his perceived political strength across several local government areas.

He said the party has requested a written submission detailing all requests and political interests before taking a formal position.

“We are still consulting. Nothing has been concluded,” Ungogo stated, noting that further meetings are expected.

A close associate of Gawuna also confirmed ongoing discussions but declined to provide details, saying he was not authorised to speak on the matter.

The development comes months after Gawuna resigned from the APC and stepped down as chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, amid a series of political realignments that saw him move between parties.

He briefly aligned with the ADC before joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May alongside supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, later securing the Kano Central senatorial ticket under the party.

Political observers say the latest negotiations could further reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections as parties continue strategic consultations and alliances.
