The Ghanaian government has announced plans to evacuate another batch of about 1,000 citizens from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in the country.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Saturday, said the latest evacuation exercise would commence on Sunday as authorities continue efforts to assist nationals who wish to return home voluntarily.
According to the ministry, the affected citizens will be transported in phases, with the first flights expected to arrive in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27, 2026.
The evacuation will focus initially on Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for government-supported repatriation.
“Priority will be given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, persons with medical conditions, and students,” the ministry stated, urging distressed Ghanaians in South Africa to contact the High Commission for assistance.
The government also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Limited, for providing temporary shelters at no cost to Ghanaians who fled their homes while awaiting evacuation arrangements.
The latest move follows President John Mahama’s earlier approval of the evacuation of 300 Ghanaian nationals and Ghana’s decision to petition the African Union over continued attacks against African migrants in South Africa.
The government said it remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of Ghanaians affected by the unrest.
