Gov Otu Bags Honorary Doctorate from Modibbo Adama University

By Abasi Ita

Modibbo Adama University, Yola, has announced the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate degree on the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, in recognition of his contributions to governance, public service and humanitarian development across Nigeria.

The decision was conveyed in an official letter dated January 20, 2026, signed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ibrahim Umar. According to the letter, the award received the approval of both the University Senate and the Governing Council, reflecting broad institutional endorsement of Governor Otu’s leadership and service record.

Professor Umar said the honour aligns with the university’s tradition of recognising leaders whose public careers demonstrate integrity, service and positive societal impact. He noted that Governor Otu’s approach to governance has been largely people focused, adding that his humane leadership style has earned him respect within and beyond Cross River State.

The Vice Chancellor explained that the governor will be awarded the Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, a distinction reserved for individuals whose influence extends beyond their professional fields to contribute meaningfully to social development and national cohesion. The university stated that the award is in recognition of Governor Otu’s outstanding contributions and humanitarian services.

The institution further described the conferment as an affirmation of the governor’s role as a bridge builder in public life, with a governance philosophy anchored on inclusion, institutional strengthening and sustainable development. Professor Umar observed that these values are consistent with the ideals Modibbo Adama University promotes through its academic and civic engagements.

The formal investiture is scheduled to hold during the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of the university on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The event will take place at the Convocation Square of Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Adamawa State.

On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate and staff, the Vice Chancellor congratulated Governor Otu and commended his contributions to national development and public service. He added that the university looks forward to formally recognising the governor’s achievements and expressed its highest regards ahead of his expected attendance at the convocation ceremony.
