Governors Urge IGP Disu to Tackle Insecurity

The chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has urged the new Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to provide decisive leadership in tackling insecurity across the country.

The Kwara governor spoke with State House Correspondents on Monday after the Nigeria Police Council (NPC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

The NPC confirmed Mr Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, formally ratifying his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd police boss.

Mr Tinubu had earlier appointed Mr Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

In line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, the appointment required confirmation by the NPC before assumption of office on a substantive basis.

The NGF chairman said the council carefully reviewed Mr Disu’s service records, performance and recommendations before approving the appointment.

“At the deliberations, we went through his records, his performance in office and the recommendations.

“The council was glad to approve the recommendations for him to be appointed the Inspector-General of Police.” he said.

Mr AbdulRazaq congratulated the new police boss and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on the mandate.

“Congratulations to the new Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Disu,”

He stated that the council had high expectations of the new police chief amid ongoing security challenges across the country.

“He has his work cut out for him, especially in this age when there are increasing discussions around state police,” he said.

Mr AbdulRazaq added that Mr Disu’s previous assignments in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) demonstrated his operational experience.

“He has been through major assignments in Lagos State and the FCT, so he has a record to show that he can perform.

“There are great expectations from the 36 states and the FCT, which he has to organise and coordinate.

“We wish him all the best and we look forward to working with him,” he said.
