Groups Warn Against Moves to Destabilise APC Governors’ Forum Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Forum of Nigerian Professionals in Politics and the National Youth Council have warned against alleged attempts to destabilise the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), cautioning that internal divisions within the body could weaken the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The FNPP specifically called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and preserve the unity of the forum, which it described as a key pillar in the political coordination and consolidation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Sani Magaji, and National Secretary, Ike Chidolue, the group said the PGF, under the leadership of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, as deputy chairman, had emerged as one of the strongest stabilising structures within the APC.

According to the group, the forum has strengthened collaboration among APC governors, deepened coalition-building efforts and improved political alignment in support of Tinubu’s administration.

The FNPP stated that the increasing influence of the PGF within the APC had made it a target for forces allegedly seeking to weaken the ruling party ahead of the next election cycle.

The group warned that any attempt to fracture the current leadership structure of the forum could trigger avoidable divisions within the APC at a critical political period.

Drawing comparisons with the crisis that engulfed the Peoples Democratic Party during the leadership tussle involving former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the FNPP said the APC must avoid repeating mistakes that contributed to the PDP’s decline at the national level.

“The President must protect the structures that are working and resist every attempt by fifth columnists and internal destabilising forces seeking to weaken the political coordination presently driving the APC nationally,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Council faulted the Arewa Youth Assembly over calls for the impeachment of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, over issues relating to the PGF.

Speaking on the development yesterday, the National Vice President of the council, Kehinde Olorunjubelo, described the move as misplaced and counterproductive.

Olorunjubelo said youth groups should not allow themselves to be drawn into internal party disputes that do not directly affect the welfare of young Nigerians.

“Youths should not dabble into Progressive Governors’ Forum politics,” he said, adding that the youth constituency should not be influenced by disgruntled political elements.

According to him, the PGF remains an internal APC structure with mechanisms for resolving disputes, warning that using the name of northern youths to advance partisan interests undermines the credibility of youth advocacy nationwide.

He urged young Nigerians to focus on pressing national issues such as unemployment, insecurity, education and economic hardship.
