Haruspice Bags Second Master’s Degree, Lauds NOUN’s Flexible Academic Framework

Renowned journalist and public affairs commentator, Abdullahi O. Haruna, popularly known as Haruspice, has earned a second master’s degree in Mass Communication from the National Open University of Nigeria, further consolidating his academic and professional credentials.

Haruna, who described the academic experience as both demanding and intellectually rewarding, said the programme exceeded his initial expectations, noting that the institution’s structure requires rigorous, real-time engagement and disciplined scholarship for any candidate seeking distinction.

Commending the university’s model, he praised NOUN for providing what he termed a seamless and flexible academic platform for working-class Nigerians. According to him, the institution serves as “a bridge that exists to connect the yawning gulf in Nigeria’s educational sector,” particularly for professionals striving to balance career advancement with higher education.

He added that the programme significantly enhanced his theoretical grounding while deepening his practical understanding of mass communication, equipping him with a more robust perspective of the discipline.

Haruna also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his academic mentor, Emmanuel Nathan Oguche, in shaping his scholarly journey. He further credited the Commander of the Mining Marshals, John Onoja Attah, whose work in the solid minerals sector inspired the focus of his research.

His thesis, titled “Influence of Newspapers’ Framing of Security Policy on NSCDC’s Response to Illegal Mining in Nigeria,” examines the nexus between media narratives and institutional responses to security challenges within the mining sector.

Widely regarded as an outspoken yet analytical voice, Haruna has built a reputation for incisive commentary on national issues, often interrogating policies and political developments with a candid and thought-provoking approach. While his views frequently stimulate public discourse, observers note that he is less of a controversial figure in the scandalous sense and more of a commentator whose perspectives provoke critical debate.

Beyond journalism, Haruna is reputed to be one of the leading masters of ceremonies in the Federal Capital Territory, underscoring his versatility in communication and public engagement.

He dedicated the academic feat to “Mama Jenebu,” in recognition of her enduring support and influence.
